Because of how human beings have evolved over time, most people don’t have room in their mouths for wisdom teeth to come in correctly, without problems. Instead of the teeth erupting normally, wisdom teeth can become impacted and/or come in at the wrong angle (horizontally, not vertically). Typically this happens when people are in their late teens or early twenties, but it can become problematic at even a younger age.
When wisdom teeth don’t come in correctly, generally, they need to be extracted. The first sign of a problem, unfortunately, is often the pain that comes from an abscessed tooth and dental infection, which can lead to a dental emergency.

With most wisdom teeth extractions, we’ll use some type of sedation, typically oral sedation (also known as conscious sedation) or IV sedation (also known as general anesthesia). Sedation helps ensure that the surgery is as comfortable as possible.
